House Do Over

do-overOn Monday we met with the first builder to come up with a bid for us. To say the least, it was disappointing.

The total came in at $804,266. And that’s after we bought the lot for $248,000.

Seriously. We’ve built a million dollar home. And this is not it! This house is the downsize into something reasonable and not so all-consuming. Something that would allow us to go boating on the weekend. We are trying to build a debt-free house. Remember?

And now we’re hearing that this new concept is going to cost more than the mansion?

OK, so we are doing all sorts of non-standard stuff. The concrete, the metal, the fire-proofing and water-proofing, the radiant heat, and the amazing cooling system. And it’s still enormous by most world standards. I get it.

But still!

So I spend Monday night not sleeping and Tuesday morning huffing and puffing. By Tuesday afternoon — after a long walk up a mountain at Snowbird — Sam and I decided that we didn’t want to make the same mistake again. We didn’t want to make the house our life priority. We want to be completely out of debt ASAP.

So, we hiked back down the mountain and got to work on a makeover.

Sam assured me it would be easier. (And after three years of plugging away at the plans, it has to be.) He says the unknowns are resolved. He’s got the constraints managed. I went out on a limb I finally let him tell me the “great ideas” he had — right after we got the plans wet stamped. And they were good.

Back to the drawing board. In double time. Hopefully I’ll have some good news to report by weekend! I can’t believe how fast this is going this time.

We’re on our third attempt. With two completed layouts that are satisfactory, we have a third in the works. We think it’ll be the winner.

That sounds really disappointing. Your positive attitude is really great. I’m excited to see your new plans.

SueLoo, thanks for the kind words. Sorry I missed your comment before.

Yes, it really stunk, but now that it’s past I’m actually grateful for the experience. Amazingly, I like this house even better. BETTER! And we’re saving money, to boot.
