When we decided to move from the mansion to a rental home — to finally get moving on the dream home — we faced a problem. While rental homes were plentiful, the vast majority of them were small, bread-and-butter, starter homes.
Even though the rental we were looking for was to provide temporary accommodations, it would also be the home for our children, the place where we would celebrate birthdays and holiday, the location where we would be making memories for a year or more. Add in the fact that we have a large family and three home businesses, and you can see that a three-bedroom starter home just wasn’t going to cut it.
Trying to rent a nice, large home is challenging. We were helped, ironically, by the lousy economy. As it turned out we had a number of builder spec homes — listed for sale but sitting empty — that the developers and owners were happy to rent out.
If you’re in a similar situation, looking for very nice apartment or condo — and the economy isn’t helping you out — take a look at Luxury Rentals. They have an up-to-date, easily navigable site. Just plug in your zip code and you’ll find the listings in your area. You can also specify number of bedrooms and/or bathrooms, and filter by a minimum and maximum rental rate.
If you are looking for a rental and have special needs, you may run into further barriers finding something suitable. Check Disability.gov for information on housing rights, tax credits, and accessibility issues.
With a little research, you can find just what you are looking for.

Hi Alison,
Sounds like a win-win situation for the renters and for the developers. Thanks for the heads up.

If only. What I’m looking for an apartment for a single mom with very little income that isn’t a hell hole. Got a good lead on that?
I’ll see what I can find, Jasmine!
