On the Road Again

frank lloyd wright living room On the Road AgainA couple of weeks ago, entirely out of the blue, we got a phone call from a family who lives exactly .3 miles from our empty lot. (Our current rental is 6.3 miles away and our old house was 17.9.) They are moving to New York for one year and wanted to know if we would be interested in renting their home.

The trauma of moving is such that I didn’t even want to think about it. For some days I let it go. But more and more the appeal of living in our future neighborhood, living by the neighbors we attend church with, being close to the schools we are driving to every day, being involved in activities in the community where we intend to stay, became more and more attractive.

Finally, we called the home-owners back and asked if we could look at the house. When we did, we knew it wouldn’t work. The house is stunning inside — it’s actually a replica of Frank Lloyd Wright’s living room. But it’s only 4,100 square feet. We have temporarily squeezed into a 5,400 square foot home, but going smaller is impossible.

Still, the convenience of the location and being able to settle my children in a permanent neighborhood nagged at me. Sam and I discussed it again. And again. And slept on it. And looked at the layout a few dozen times.

After much fussing, we decided the pros outweighed the cons and signed a contract with them today.

We’re on the road again. We move in August 24. The second annual purge begins!

Good luck on your move. It will be nice being closer to the new home!

Military brat. Moved so many times I can’t count. Hang in there. One more move and you’re set!

Sorry you guys had to fuss about this (such a polite term, I hope the discussion were as polite), but it sounds like you made a good decision. What did you do with all of the stuff you needed to purge? How has it been working out for you?

Oh, if only you knew my husband, Ileane! Absolutely the discussions were polite, I hope I didn’t give another impression. We just couldn’t decide if it was worth moving! Moving is such a big deal — particularly when it involves eight people and three companies! :)

We (again!) got rid of our excess stuff and then rented a storage unit for about $100 per month to put the rest in. It is jam-packed with stuff we don’t need as often (like Christmas decorations). The rest we tightly configured in the room and garage. We have a large, open main living area (per the picture), but the other rooms are, shall we say, well used!
