Main Floor Concrete Poured

by Alison Moore Smith on April 14, 2010

After trying most flooring surfaces known to man, including carpet, laminate, ceramic tile, natural stone tile, and hardwood, we decided our new custom home would have polished concrete on the main floor and stained concrete in the basement.
After extensive discussion and comparing, we chose Stewart Specialty Services to lay and polish the main floor [...]

Custom Building is a Nightmare

by Alison Moore Smith on March 20, 2010

Building is a nightmare. At least that’s what I hear. Whenever someone learns we are building a custom home, the response is pretty predictable. Generally it’s something like:

I hope you don’t get divorced!
I’ve heard that’s more stressful than a death in the family.
You’re supposed to be done in June? You mean September, right?

Building is infamous [...]

After learning about our first construction delay due to a rental issue, we confirmed that the  panels would be delivered on January 25. The plan was that the panel company would install the basement while teaching our builder the system, so that our builder could install the remaining floors.
This morning we [...]

Construction Delay

by Alison Moore Smith on January 10, 2010

This evening we got a call from E-Z Block. They are making the lightweight concrete panels that will form the structure for our home. And the have a bunch of our money — half the cost of the first set of panels. The entire build has been waiting on them since the basement was poured [...]
